How Does Cooling Blanket Work and How to Keep Cool all Night Without Air Conditioning?

The Principle of a Cooling Blanket

A cooling blanket is a sleep product made from special materials designed to create a cooling sensation. It provides a more comfortable sleep experience in summer or hot environments. But how does a cooling blanket work? Cooling blankets use special materials like cooling fibers and gel particles to absorb and dissipate body heat, creating a cooler sleep environment.

Special Materials

A cooling blanket uses special materials, mainly fibers and fabrics with heat-dissipating properties. These materials can quickly absorb heat from the body and release it, speeding up the transfer of body heat. This makes you feel cooler. The outer layer of the cooling blanket usually uses breathable fabric to increase air circulation. The inner layer is made from materials with cooling functions, such as cooling fibers or gel particles. These special materials help lower body temperature, making you feel cool.

Cooling Fibers

Cooling fibers are commonly used in cooling blankets and are made through a special textile process. They have excellent heat dissipation, quickly absorbing body heat and transferring it inside the fibers. The polymers in cooling fibers usually have a high thermal conductivity. This means that when the body touches the cooling fibers, the heat is quickly absorbed and conducted through the fibers, making the body feel cool.

Getting a good night's sleep without air conditioning can be challenging during hot summer weather. Fortunately, there are a few ways to make those nights cooler even without AC.

Increase Air Circulation

Summer nights can be hot, but the temperature is usually much lower than your body temperature. Increasing air circulation helps to carry away the extra heat from your body. If it's safe, keep the windows open. It’s even better if you have windows facing different directions, paired with a fan. A larger fan, preferably a ceiling fan, can move more air at a slower speed and with less noise.

Make Smart Use of Fans

Try placing a bowl of ice in front of a standing fan or hanging a wet towel over it. You can also spray a mixture of water and a few drops of rubbing alcohol (which evaporates faster than water) to enjoy a cool breeze. Another option is to place two fans near the windows by your bed. This setup can help you have a cooler night. The cooling effect will be even better if you can create a cross-breeze with the two fans and the cool outdoor air from the open windows.

Choose the Right Bedding

There are a few ways to make sure your bedding helps keep you as cool as possible. First, using sheets made of cotton or other breathable natural fibers can reduce the feeling of stuffiness. Second, light-colored sheets absorb less heat and can "feel" cooler psychologically.

Use Curtains Correctly

Replace your curtains with white ones to keep the heat out. During the day, keep the curtains closed when it's hot outside. As the temperature cools down outside, open the curtains to let the warm air inside flow out, helping to keep your home cooler at night.
